Cockburns produces some of the worlds finest ports ÷ from vine to glass. The grapes for Special Reserve are picked at the peak of ripeness from single varietal vineyards in the best vineyard areas, assuring top quality fruit for the Special Reserve blend. Cockburns ferments longer and uses a higher percentage of older wines in the blend to achieve a more complex, less sweet character that is the Cockburns signature style.
Port can be classified in two broad categories: wood-aged or bottle-aged. Cockburns Fine Tawny and Ruby, Special Reserve, Anno and old Tawny ports are wood aged. These wood aged ports are blended wines from multiple vintages. Cockburns uses a higher percentage of older wines than do other port houses in its blends, and refreshes the blends more often with younger wines to enhance complexity and freshness. Wood aged ports are meant to be enjoyed upon release. Cockburns Single Quinta and Vintage ports, classified as bottle aged, are aged a short time in wood then bottled, unfiltered, for further aging.
