Port should be stored like all other fine red wines: in a cool, dark place with medium humidity and no great changes in temperature over time. It is also advisable to avoid strong light or strong smells.
Vintage Ports and Single Quinta Vintage Ports should be stored on their side, with the wine in contact with the cork, to prevent the cork from drying and cracking.
Vintage Ports should be aged for 15-30 years before consumption.*
Single Quinta Vintage Ports are generally aged 8-10 years from their vintage date.*
Other ports, such as Character Port, Fine Ruby & Fine Tawny, Aged Tawnies and Late Bottled Vintage are ready to drink when purchased. These ports can be stored upright or on their sides for a short period of time before consumption.
*These are the recommended aging times for the best vintage years and for optimum maturity. Many people prefer these wines at a younger age. Additionally, successful bottle aging is largely dependent upon the quality of the storage conditions.
